Aus immigration causing women to far outnumber men

New census figures have shown the number of women in Australia now far outweighs the number of men, causing an unprecedented "man drought", reports BBC News.

Statistics from the census show that there are currently around 100,000 more females in Australia than males and the problem is picking up speed in the coastal cities.

Bernard Salt, an Australian demographer, said Australian immigration is in part responsible for the "drought". According to his book, Man Drought, the number of Australian men moving overseas has increased while the number of women moving to coastal cities for employment and lifestyle changes has also seen an upward trend.

"If you go into the United Arab Emirates census you'll find there is around 12,000 Australians living in Dubai, mostly male, mostly in the 25 to 34-year age group," he said. "Here is an example of one country that has drawn out a specific age demographic out of Australia which has contributed to the 'man drought'."

In regional Australia, the trend is reversed. Large amounts of men have been left behind by females who are flocking to the coast for lifestyle changes and employment reasons.
